History: One of 24 Essex Class carriers, Intrepid and her sister ships marked the Navy’s change from reliance on battleships to carriers as their principal capital ships. Joining the fleet late in World War II, she was at Leyte Gulf, the largest naval engagement in history. During her WWI career, she survived five kamikaze hits, seven bomb attacks and one torpedo strike. Refitted in Brooklyn in 1954, she served in the Mediterranean, and later in the Vietnam War. She was the prime recovery vessel for NASA, and finally retired in 1974. Rescued from the scrap heap by the Intrepid Museum Foundation.
