Unlike her successor vessels, she had to surface to fire her missiles. Nevertheless, she and her sister ships were trailblazers for the current fleets of all the major nuclear powers. Decommissioned in 1964, after only six years in service, she was given to the Intrepid Museum Foundation in 1988, shortly before she was scheduled to serve as a torpedo target.
